Mysterious Labyrinth/Future Televised Games

A group of people whose memories have been blanked wake up in a mysterious labyrinth and have to survive death traps and each other. A promising mix of Cube and The Hunger Games killed by clumsy storytelling

Alien/Predator Series' Crossover

Beginning as fan mill speculation, 20th Century Fox finally brought their Alien and Predator franchises together on the screen here. The result is an okay effort in the hands of Paul W.S. Anderson, even if it never has the grueling intensity of the early entries in either series

Bunker of the Dead (2015)

Bunker of the Dead (2015) poster

Nazi Zombie First Person Shooter Found Footage Film

A revival of the Nazi zombie fad, which essentially becomes a First Person Shooter film as someone wearing a GoPro camera runs through a bunker dispatching zombies

Cube2: Hypercube (2002)

Cube 2: Hypercube (2002) poster poster
Rating: ★★★
Mysterious Hyper-Dimensional Labyrinth

The first sequel to Vincenzo Natali’s fine conceptual puzzlebox film. This expands out on the idea, having a cube that bends through time and space, and has a certain fascination if not as much as the original did

Dave Made a Maze (2017)

Dave Made a Maze (2017) poster
Rating: ★★★
Lost in a Cardboard Labyrinth

A man builds a cardboard maze in his living room only for he and others to become lost in it. This has a wonderfully inventive scrappy handmade eccentricity. Imagine Cube remade as one of Michel Gondry’s sweded films

After an Alien Invasion/Mayan End of the World

Amateur low-budget production about mysterious happenings in the aftermath of an alien invasion. This has many ideas but none of them much coalesce into a plot

Doom (2005)

Doom (2005) poster
Rating:
Videogame Adaptation/Labyrinth of Monsters

Disappointing film version of the videogame. The film seems to either miss or water down the principal appeals of the game, although you do get Dwayne Johnson (still billed as The Rock) as the bad guy

Exit 8 (2025)

Exit 8 (2025) poster
Rating: ★★½
Videogame Adaptation/Trapped in a Labyrinth

Enigmatic adaptation of a Japanese videogame where the protagonist is trapped inside a railway platform tunnel and must walk through the same corridor that repeats itself with minute variations to find the exit

Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)

Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) poster
Rating: ★★★
Sadomasochistic Demons

The first of the Hellraiser sequels. This lacks Clive Barker’s original dark obsessive vision but is worthwhile in its own right, expanding the scope of the story out into a magnificent vision of Hell

Immortals (2011)

Immortals (2011) poster
Rating: ★★★
Greek Myth

A venture into Greek myth retelling the story of Theseus and the labyrinth. Tarsem Singh, a director with a visually extraordinary eye, lavishes everything on the sets and costumes. One film of the 3D overkill fad that needs to be seen in 3D

Trapped in a Sea of Grass/Stephen King Adaptation

Vincenzo Natali, the director of Cube, adapts a novella by Stephen King and his son Joe Hill about people becoming lost in a topographically and temporally shifting sea of grass

Young Adult/Maze World/Conceptual Breakthrough Story

One of the better among the current fad for Young Adult dystopian SF works post-The Hunger Games. This dispenses with dystopian Coming of Age stories and gives us a fascinating conceptual mystery even if the answers prove underwhelming

The Platform (2019)

The Platform (2019) poster
Rating: ★★★★
Allegorical Prison of Multiple Levels

A stunningly allegorical film that falls somewhere between Cube and High-Rise where people are trapped in a prison and forced to fight over food as a banquet table passes down the levels each day, resulting in a society where those at the top claim superiority over those below.

Relic (2020)

Relic (2020) poster
Rating: ★★★
Mysterious Happenings in a House

A beautiful slow burn of a film that avoids almost any labels one tries to apply. It could be a film about dementia, it starts out seeming like a work about a haunted house but refuses to adhere to any of the tropes and instead heads for a remarkable and unique place of its own

The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior (2008)

The Scorpion King: Rise of a Warrior (2008) poster
Rating:
Sword and Sorcery

Prequel to The Scorpion King. Unfortunately director Russell Mulcahy allows his broad hand with comedy free reign and the plot is overrun by glib character banter and constant flip modern one-liners

Shadow Puppets (2007)

Shadow Puppets (2007) poster

Mysterious Labyrinth/Conceptual Breakthrough

A conceptual puzzle film – people wake up in a facility with no memory of who they are – reminiscent of Cube with the smoke monsters from Lost thrown in. Unfortunately, this is too low-budget to create much mystery and the big reveal is not a terribly interesting one
