Super-Computers
The idea of the Super-Computer comes from the dawn of the computing era in the 1940s when there was a public fascination with Binac and Univac, the first major computers that took up entire rooms.
From there, science-fiction quickly adopted the idea of computers of similar (and larger) size gaining self-awareness and deciding they could run things better than humans and taking over. Most Super-Computer stories are either works about Artificial Intelligence and/or Machines Amok. There are a number of scenarios where Super-Computers run Dystopian societies.
The super-computer concept has largely died off with the rise of the home computer and internet revolution, although still persists in varied forms such as Skynet in the Terminator films.
