Plot
The billionaire Steven Hagen goes on a private tour of the research facilities at Triassic Labs where scientists under Dr Marisa Martinelli have revived dinosaurs and are attempting to use them to grow replacement human organs. Just as they arrive, a gojirasaurus escapes from captivity and rampages through the complex, killing several of the group. With the facility now in automated lockdown, they are trapped with the escaped dinosaur and must eliminate it within two hours before the facility is purged with poison gas.
The Asylum is a low-budget production company that has been active since the early 2000s where they have put out a prolific output of films, ranging from their Mockbusters – films made with titles that resemble high-profile theatrical releases – along with a body of disaster and monster movies, in particular killer shark films with their ongoing Mega Shark and Multi-Headed Shark series and the B-movie hit of Sharknado (2013) and sequels.
Ever since Jurassic Park (1993) came out, there have been a great many B-budget dinosaur films. The Asylum has made quite a number of these low-budget dinosaur films with the likes of 100 Million BC (2008), The Land That Time Forgot (2009), Age of Dinosaurs (2013), Jurassic School (2017) and Jurassic Domination (2022). Triassic World was also a mockbuster released at the same time as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018).
Dylan Vox is an actor who has appeared in a great many low-budget films. After a career that started out as a gay porn actor, Vox appeared in The Asylum’s Titanic II (2010) and then went on to numerous other films for them including Battle of Los Angeles (2011), 40 Days and Nights (2012), Super Cyclone (2012), Apocalypse Pompeii (2014), Sleeping Beauty (2014), Hercules Reborn (2014), CarGo (2017), Troy: The Odyssey (2017), as well as films for other low-budget production companies. Vox made his directorial debut with Triassic World and has since gone on to direct some twenty Christmas and true crime confessional tv movies mostly for the Lifetime Channel. He has also produced these and several of The Asylum’s films.
Triassic World is one of the more generally competent amongst these low-budget dinosaur films. The plot borrows the basics of Jurassic Park and has a small group trapped inside a facility as a single dinosaur gets loose and goes amok. The film does this reasonably well within a contained situation. The set-up does involve the rather daft idea of dinosaurs (cold-blooded animals) being used to grow organs for transplant into humans (mammals).
The digital dinosaur effects are reasonable enough for a film like this and certainly do not let the side down as in many of the abovementioned B dinosaur efforts. Even the actors are a shade better than the average Asylum film (perhaps as a result of the film being directed by an actor).
The Asylum later made a sequel Triassic Hunt (2021), although with a different director and cast.
