The Science Fiction Horror and Fantasy Film Review
The End of the World refers to the destruction of planet Earth and/or the end of human civilisation. This should be differentiated from assorted Catastrophe and Disaster Movie scenarios where we see large parts of society being destroyed. In these, the End of the World is frequently threatened but is almost never depicted as happening.
The end can be due to Nuclear War or the unleashing of a Doomsday Weapon. In other instances, the end can be due to an environmental catastrophe that renders the world uninhabitable; a pandemic that wipes out all or just human life; the impact of another celestial body such as an asteroid, meteor or another planet; or else the sun going supernova.
Some films about Biblical End Times depict the Biblical Apocalypse occurring, or sometimes the unleashing of elder gods from Lovecraftian Horror. Some works leave the cause of the end as mysterious and unexplained, creating in effect an apocalypse that is an existential question mark.
A popular hit based on a book by Andy Weir, who wrote The Martian, where Ryan Gosling is a scientist who undergoes a space expedition and makes alien contact in an effort to save the Earth

How interesting can a film be that consists of nothing more than two people talking? The answer is surprisingly good. Boasting that it is Jordan’s first SF film, this produces an extraordinary series of conceptual reversal twists while never venturing beyond being a man and a woman talking on a beach
Joss Whedon scripted work that is less a horror film than a meta-horror film that is constantly deconstructing the genre and subverting its cliches. A rare genre entry less about visceral impact than it has brains to spare
The End of the World seems the least likely backdrop for a romantic comedy. Newcomer Lorene Scafaria seems less interested in depicting social collapse than in making an insipid romcom road movie with two leads who fail to strike up any connection
Lars von Trier’s exploration of his depression continues in this nihilistic end of the world film. It is bleak and relentless but the characters are opaque in their motivations. Somehow I prefer von Trier back in agent provocateur mode

Abel Ferrara makes an End of the World film that hardly ever leaves the characters’ apartment and in which almost nothing happens. Considering the angry, bleak work of his heyday, you cannot wonder if the 60 year-old Ferrara has lost his mojo
Another Syfy Channel low-budget disaster film. This creates a fascinating if scientifically dubious end of the world premise about a white hole but spends the show on the routine stuff of car chases and gunfights
Amateur low-budget production about mysterious happenings in the aftermath of an alien invasion. This has many ideas but none of them much coalesce into a plot

Cheaply made Syfy Channel attempt to copy Roland Emmerich’s 2012 that jumps aboard wacky Erich von Daniken nuttiness but fails to create a worthy End of the World drama due to cut-price effects
