Plot
Bull is a mutt dog adopted by a family. Bull’s balls are currently causing him to run rampant through the house as he tries to hump everything. Bull is in love with Honey, the show dog next door, but considers her to be above his aspirations. Bull considers himself lucky that he still has his testicles – his other friends at the dog park lament life after theirs have been fixed. Bull then discovers that his human family are being nice to him and have even placed Kool Aid in the toilet bowl, the warning sign from the other dogs that he is about to be fixed. Bull’s friends decide to break him out of the yard to take him on a last adventure while he still has his balls.
Genndy Tartakovsky emerged as producer of a series of hit animated tv shows during the 2000s, including Dexter’s Laboratory (1996-2003), The Powerpuff Girls (1998-2005), Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2003-5) and Samurai Jack (2001-17), He ventured onto movie screens as director of the hit Hotel Transylvania (2012) and the first two sequels Hotel Transylvania 2 (2015) and Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation (2018). He also made Primal: Tales of Savagery (2019), a film based on the animated tv series Primal (2019-20).
From a director most known for family fare like the Hotel Transylvania films, you are taken aback about how crude, raucous and non-family friendly that Fixed ends up being. In the opening scene alone, we get Bull humping the granny’s leg, followed by a wild caterwauling slapstick sequence, not unakin to the opening sequence in Who Framed Roger Rabbit? (1988), where Bull careens around the house dipping his dick into anything from ice cream to a hat stand to the daughter’s purse.
Fixed is a film that holds little back – and is all the more entertaining for it. There are more jokes about balls, licking oneself, sniffing asses and eating shit that one thought it was possible to make in a film. Bull’s testicles even take on a life of their own and become talking characters. This is a world away from the clean sanitised Disney talking dogs films of Lady and the Tramp (1955) and The Aristo Cats (1970). The nearest film you might make a comparison to is the almost completely ignored and forgotten delight that was Rover Dangerfield (1991).
Perhaps the most outrageous scene is where the dog foursome go to visit the canine equivalent of the strip bar/whorehouse where we see strip acts that involves cute female dogs humping an old shoe; seductively licking from and splashing in a bowl; dominatrix dogs barking order to “sit” at the audience; being bathed in a shower of molasses a la Flashdance (1983); or simply a chihuahua standing on a stage and yipping. (The final scene of the film is a ladies’ night at the club with a muscular bull of a dog swinging a gigantic set of testicles). In another scene, the dog hooker Molasses tricks Bull into mounting her doggie style (naturally) just as Honey walks in. The film even goes so far as to give us an androgyne dog (something that apparently does exist) where Lucky undergoes a consciousness-raising after spending the night with it. Although the most outrageous scene is the climactic ones where Bull has to take it up the butt to protect Honey’s virtue.
Fixed also has a rather scathing view of humans. While the dogs grudgingly come to accept their loss of balls, while complaining about it, the script also digs into the pampered lives of show dogs with some scathing wit. Later the quartet of dogs encounter a Paris Hilton-styled purse dog who cries “Help me” in passing and they happily liberate her – only for her to meet a nasty end on the road moments later.
