Plot
Waldo Williams returns from a vacation to Mexico with a pain in his ass. A visit to the unorthodox Dr Wansamsaki reveals that a Mexican butt humping bull frog has laid its seed inside Waldo’s butt. However, the radioactive isotopes used during the procedure and Waldo’s failure to observe proper safety precautions means that his ass develops a life of its own. Waldo is asleep when the butt goes and kills Waldo’s unfaithful wife Valveeta and her lover. Detectives follow the trail of shit back to Waldo’s place. They disbelieve his story until the ass attacks them. The ass then grows to giant size and goes rampaging through the streets.
Mark Pirro has almost exclusively made a career as director/writer of low-budget independently-made spoof horror films. These include titles such as A Polish Vampire in Burbank (1985), Deathrow Gameshow (1987), Curse of the Queerwolf (1988), Nudist Colony of the Dead (1991) and The God Complex (2009), as well as the screenplay for My Mom’s a Werewolf (1988).
I am still trying to decide whether Rectuma is so offensive I should give it a black star or it is Mark Pirro’s masterpiece. It is the sort of Bad Taste film that would make Troma radioactive green with envy that they didn’t get to make the idea first.
A lot of the humour in Rectuma is crass, broad and unfunny. Gags about Bill Devlin’s wife Dani Leon trying to kill him off in various ways and having a thing for Black men; a lot of humour about the uncomfortableness of anal examinations; a number of racial jokes thrown at the Japanese. There is a tendency on Mark Pirro’s part to strike a vein he thinks is funny and keep on repeating it ad nauseam.
Probably the most prominent of these agonisingly repetitive gags is Jean Black who turns up as a detective who thinks she is Jodie Foster’s Clarice in The Silence of the Lambs (1991). The one thing that has to be said about it as the gag goes on and on is that Black has an uncommonly accurate mimicry of Jodie’s voice. Mark Pirro himself turns up in a flashback scene where he plays the Hannibal Lecter equivalent Dr Rectum who Black visits in his cell where he has a scene where he pulls a hamster out of his ass and then eats it.

There are a good many references and in-jokes about Japanese Monster Movies, including a visiting Japanese scientist who speaks dubbed but out of synch English. There is a chorus line of two Japanese girls (Rachel Morihiro and Hiromi Nishiyama), a parody of the twins in Mothra (1962) who turn up and sing about what is happening right throughout. They come out with some entertainingly absurd lines (in regard to the ass monster) “Though you pass through the chute/You are fragile and cute/But you could be a brute.” In one scene, they even appear standing inside a urinal before someone comes and pisses on them.
The climactic scenes turn into something of the episode with the giant rampaging breast in Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex * But Were Afraid to Ask (1972) but with a giant rampaging ass. There are assorted monster movie analogies with the ass even seen trying to climb the side of a building. There is a crude series of scenes that would be amusing if they didn’t depend on terrible ethnic caricatures with an Islamic terrorist Summa Cum Lauden (J. Michael Raye) who is persuaded to suicide fly up inside the asshole and detonate inside it, which comes with an ongoing gag about his wife calling up on his cellphone as he is in the midst of the operation.
I am still trying to decide whether I am laughing or appalled at Rectuma. Maybe a mixture of both. What you cannot deny is how utterly mind-boggling an experience it is in the outrages it courts.
