Plot
Irene Kelly has been using a machine that allows her to travel between worlds of the multiverse. Each time she arrives, she tracks down the short order cook Neville who abducted, abused and killed her daughter and kills him. As she arrives in this particular universe, she breaks into Neville’s home to find Mia, a fifteen-year-old runaway that Neville has imprisoned. She frees Mia and is forced to take her along with her. When an encounter with Neville in a convenience store turns into an armed shootout, Irene is forced to jump universes, taking Mia with her. Irene tries to explain things to Mia who then insists on being part of the effort to kill Neville.
Redux Redux was the third film from twin brothers Kevin and Matthew McManus who are credited as The McManus Brothers. The brothers had previously directed/written Funeral Kings (2012) and then ventured into genre material with the eerily enigmatic The Block Island Sound (2020). Before that, they worked as writers on tv shows such as DaVinci’s Demons (2013-5), American Vandal (2017-8) and Cobra Kai (2018-25).
Redux Redux deals with Multiverse themes. This is something that has taken over superhero films in particular in the last few years where basically multiverse means no more than alternate takes of familiar superhero characters. However, there is a much more intellectually rigorous take on this that can be found in films like Coherence (2013), Parallel (2018), Multiverse (2019), Everything Everywhere All at Once (2022), Aporia (2023), Parallel (2024) and Bulk (2025), among others. These derive from the way multiverse is used in physics, holding that every action creates an alternate, opposing branch of events, resulting in an infinite number of coexisting universes with minute differences.
With Redux Redux, The McManus Brothers have conducted something quite different to most of these other takes on the multiverse, wielding it to a Revenge film. The nearest equivalent you could point might be the multiverse-hopping action of The One (2001). There is some strong and well written character writing, during the scenes with Michaela McManus trying to explain to Stella Marcus the nature of the multiverse, or where Stella is picked up by hard-bitten trucker Dendrie Taylor. Or even just the scene where Michaela approaches Jim Cummings outside an AA meeting and we gradually understand that she has done this dozens of times, maybe much more than that, and that everything he says and does is familiar to her and he is the nearest thing she has to a consistent relationship in the multiverse.
There are some very good performances from both Michaela McManus (older sister to The McManus Brothers) and Stella Marcus who carry the film between them. Dendrie Taylor also stands out as the tough-as-nails lady trucker. All of them are particularly well served by strong dialogue and character writing. It is a sharp and adept plot. Not to mention one that creates a fascinating world – where there seems an entire operation of multiverse travellers and secret organisations to aid them. The script snakes and twists with considerable dexterity before arriving at a satisfying ending.
