Il Mare (2000)
South Korean romantic film about a couple exchanging letters across time. This later underwent a Hollywood remake as The Lake House with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock
Marian, Again (2005)
Strong and effective UK tv thriller where Stephen Tompkinson becomes obsessed with the girlfriend who went missing years earlier after he thinks he sees her again
Marooned (1969)
Released three months after the Moon Landing, this was a big-budget film depicting a space mission disaster that leaves three astronauts marooned in orbit
Marrowbone (2017)
Film about children hiding in big old house of secrets following the death of their mother. Filled with all manner of fascinating secrets and twist revelations
Mars Attacks! (1996)
Tim Burton makes a film based on the old Topps bubblegum card series about Martian invaders, which becomes an affectionately goofy tribute to 1950s alien invasion cinema
Mars Express (2023)
A French animated film, SF noir set on a future Mars with detectives fighting against someone who is jailbreaking robots. This deploys a strong and confident use of Cyberpunk tropes
Mars Needs Moms (2011)
Motion-capture animated version of a popular children’s book. The title suggests a 1950s B movie and the subtext doesn’t bear close examination but the results are engagingly put together
Marshland (2014)
A strong and tightly wound police procedural, not unreminiscent of the first season of True Detective. What makes the plot stand out is the beautifully desolate setting of the remote Spanish marshlands
Martyrs Lane (2021)
Director Ruth Platt creates a beautifully subtle and delicate ghost story where the appearance of a ghost girl ends up stirring up secrets in a household
Mary and the Witch’s Flower (2017)
The third film from former Studio Ghibli employee Hiromasa Yonebayashi who is is seen as the carrier of Hayao Miyazaki’s mantle. Sweet and amiable, even if it never hits the emotional heights Miyazaki does
Mary Shelley (2017)
Biopic of Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. This places a feminist slant on Mary’s story meaning that she wrote the book less to address themes about science and hubris than because she was in an unhappy marriage
Massacre at Central High (1976)
Classic 1970s exploitation film about a new kid in high school who takes violent reprisals against bullies. The film comes with surprising levels of allegory.
Master of the World (1961)
One amid the spate of Jules Verne adaptations of in the 1950s/60s with Vincent Price as Robur, the inventor of an amazing airship who wants mankind to stop waging war
The Matrix Reloaded (2003)
The first of the sequels to The Matrix inevitably disappointed on the massive build-up. The Wachowskis leave more questions than answers, while the new action scenes are often jaw-dropping they also feel boiler-plated on
The Matrix Revolutions (2003)
Third of The Matrix sequels and the weakest of the series. This offers one showstopping effects sequence, on the other hand it also leaves a host of unanswered questions dangling
Matthew Blackheart (2002)
A film about a monster hunter from the 1940s who is thawed out in the present-day. This appears to have been made as a pilot for a tv series that never went ahead
Max & Co (2007)
An amiable Swiss Claymation effort not dissimilar to Aardman’s films concerning a young fox troubadour who takes a stand against a tyrannical fly swat manufacturer
Max Reload and the Nether Blasters (2020)
Videogamers fight a demonic entity unleashed from a 1980s game. A film that is far more fun that you expect and comes loaded with videogaming in-jokes
May (2002)
An almost unclassifiable work from Lucky McKee that plays out as a gonzo love and rejection story featuring an alienated Angela Bettis before an end that tips over into horror
May the Devil Take You: Chapter Two (2020)
May the Devil Take You was a homage to 1980s films like The Evil Dead. Here Timo Tjahjanto makes a sequel and goes absolutely demented
Mayhem (2017)
A cross between The Belko Experiment and George Romero’s The Crazies as workers in an office is infected by a virus that causes them to lose their inhibitions. Made with dark relish
The Maze (1953)
William Cameron Menzies built a standout genre reputation with films like Things to Come and Invaders from Mars. This is a haunted house film, albeit with an ending that goes into WTF territory. Menzies was also a production designer and his films come with a design scheme superbly attuned to the mood of the film
The Maze Runner (2014)
One of the better among the current fad for Young Adult dystopian SF works post-The Hunger Games. This dispenses with dystopian Coming of Age stories and gives us a fascinating conceptual mystery even if the answers prove underwhelming
Meatball Machine (2005)
The first of a series of gore-drenched Japanese films featuring absurd creature effects and action moves. This is a wonderfully cartoonish film with rival bio-mechanoid creatures fighting
Medea (1969)
Pier Paolo Pasolini makes a film based on Medea, the wife of Jason from Greek myth (not to be confused with Tyler Perry’s films), who slaughters their children after he leaves her for another woman
The Medium (2021)
A Thai possession film shot Found Footage. This takes place among very different cultural rituals, which makes a welcome difference to the cliches that dominate Western possession films, and builds up to something quite out there
Meet the Applegates (1991)
A satiric comedy about a family of insects who set up house in suburbia posing as humans. This takes to its premise with a darkly farcical tone that is quite hilarious
Meet the Robinsons (2007)
One of the more enjoyable efforts from the mid-2000s dead zone of Disney animation, this quickly gets demented and emerges like The Jetsons colliding with The Royal Tenenbaums
Meeting Evil (2012)
A surprisingly good variant on The Hitcher with Samuel L. Jackson as a psychopathic stranger who takes hapless family man Luke Wilson for a ride leaving a trail of bodies
Meg 2: The Trench (2023)
The sequel to the Jason Statham starring killer shark film, bigger and more over the top than before. The surprise is seeing cult director Ben Wheatley turning to making a big, dumb film
The Meg (2018)
Big budget about a giant prehistoric killer shark film. This is like a Sharknado film with its sense of its own risibility perfectly under cap, played seriously and mounted as a series of spectacular shark attack sequences
Mega Python vs. Gatoroid (2011)
The Asylum had hits with Mega Python vs Giant Shark and Mega Piranha featuring former teen pop stars Debbie Gibson and Tiffany. This pits Tiffany and Debbie together in an epic bitch-fight vs giant animals
Mega Shark vs Kolossus (2015)
The fourth of The Asylum’s Mega Shark films and the best of the series where they get the balance of tongue-in-cheek absurdity just right and the low-budget effects prove surprisingly good
Mega Time Squad (2018)
There have been some very sophisticated time paradox films in recent years. At complete contrast, this is a comedy that has a great deal of fun with the premise of a guy and assorted temporal copies of himself running about
Melancholia (2011)
Lars von Trier’s exploration of his depression continues in this nihilistic end of the world film. It is bleak and relentless but somehow I preferred von Trier back in agent provocateur mode
Memories of Murder (2003)
An early film from Bong Joon-ho made before his international breakthrough, this is a true crime work about the investigation into a rural Korean serial killer
Memory: The Origins of Alien (2019)
An absorbing documentary about the making of Alien, which charts the film’s origins, the key personnel and the making of the classic chestburster scene
Men & Chicken (2015)
A Danish black comedy in perfect pitch deadpan. Imagine a version of The Island of Dr Moreau as directed by Giorgos Lanthimos of Dogtooth and The Lobster fame
Men Behind the Sun (1988)
One of the most extreme films ever made, a catalogue of the true-life atrocities and experiments on prisoners during the Japanese occupation of Manchuria in WWII. Not for the faint-hearted
Men in Black (1997)
A huge box-office hit, this is a witty comedy that turns the UFO conspiracy of The X Files on its head with the heroes part of an organisation that covers up the existence of aliens
The Men Who Stare at Goats (2009)
Film based on the supposed Psychic Warfare Division of the US Army. Based on a non-fiction book, this is played by director Grant Heslov as a broad farce and sits on an uncertain line as to whether the powers are real
The Mephisto Waltz (1971)
A clear attempt to copy Rosemary’s Baby made with extraordinary stylishnessas Jacqueline Bisset believes husband Alan Alda’s body has been stolen by a dead man
Mercy (2000)
One of the better copies of Basic Instinct with detective Ellen Barkin being tempted as she investigates a serial killer who is targeting women involved with a lesbian call girl
Meridian (1990)
A much better than usual film from Charles Band, an erotic fairytale in which Sherilyn Fenn becomes involved with a circusmaster and his twin brother who turns into a werewolf
Message from Space (1978)
A Japanese attempt to jump aboard the space opera bandwagon in the aftermath of Star Wars fad, a vigorous and colourful retelling of The Seven Samurai set in space
Messages Deleted (2010)
The last script from Larry Cohen, a playful work with Matthew Lillard as a screenwriting lecturer harassed by a killer only to find real-life doesn’t obey the same rules that screenplays do
Messiah (2001)
A strong and worthwhile serial killer thriller mini-series from the BBC with a killer who is targeting victims with the names and professions of the apostles. Several sequels followed.
Messiah of Evil (1973)
Film that has developed a cult reputation set in a seaside town where the dead are returning to life. The film has an unsettling nightmare ambience where things happen without any explanation
Metamorphosis (2010)
Wildly experimental South Korean adaptation of the Kafka story about a man turning into an insect – a film shot entirely by the director in bed with the camera pointed at his feet
Meteor Moon (2020)
The Asylum’s mockbuster version of Moonfall. This plays the same ridiculous premise with an ingenious absurdity and is proves more entertaining than its big budget model
Metropia (2009)
Animated film set in a dystopian near-future Europe of constant surveillance where a call centre worker discovers that people are being monitored via implants in their heads
Michel Gondry: Do It Yourself (2023)
A documentary focused on the unique and distinctive French director Michel Gondry, tracing his emergence through music video and to the success of films like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
The Midnight Club (2022)
Mike Flanagan horror mini-series adapted from Christopher Pike’s book, this is set around a group of patients in a hospice who form a group to tell each other horror stories
Midnight Special (2016)
This feels like a 70s/80s sf film like Starman or Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Based around a series of amazing happenings but its crucial failing as SF is the lack of explanations for why these are happening
A Midsummer Night’s Dream (1999)
Amid Kenneth Branagh’s dynamic cinematic revival of Shakespeare in the 1990s, there was this all-star adaptation of Shakespeare’s whimsy about fairy enchantments
A Million Days (2023)
An ambitious film yet a;; contained within a single house, set on the eve of a space mission where the commander realises that the A.I. has started going wildly off-book
Mimic (1997)
This was the second film from Guillermo Del Toro, a modest and quite good copy of Alien with Mira Sorvino hunting intelligent, evolved insects in the New York subway tunnels

A Mamoru Hosoda film nominated for the Best Animated Film at the Academy Awards. A young boy jealous at the arrival of a baby sister is visited by her future self
Miranda (1948)
The very first mermaid film, a wonderfully droll British comedy in which a capricious Glynis Johns innocently wreaks havoc on all the men around her
Miss Meadows (2014)
There is an irresistible appeal to the idea of Katie Holmes as a sweetly smiling Miss Manners dressed in Sunday Best who, in between correcting people’s manners and punctuation, is also a gun-toting vigilante
Miss Zombie (2013)
A remarkable Japanese zombie film about a family who adopt a zombie maid. This is shot kitchen sink style and becomes a study in the way her blank presence affects everyone around her
Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)
The sixth Mission: Impossible film. Not the best of the series but Tom Cruise and associates have everything polished to an expertly honed formula and the film is a kinetic ride of intensive and jaw-dropping action sequences
Mission: Impossible II (2000)
The second of Tom Cruise’s Mission: Impossible films where he has the smarts to hire John Woo as director who brings his customary flair with action to transform the film into something exhilarating
Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015)
The Mission: Impossible films have become superbly polished vehicles with death-defying stuntwork and spectacular action sequences. This enacts it well but the main problem is that Ghost Protocol is a tough act to follow

A fine film that deserves much wider recognition that features Jeff Goldblum cast as a man in an asylum who makes the claims that he is The Devil
Moloch (2022)
A Dutch-made Folk Horror film about the discovery of a witch’s body in a bog. This is a slow burn film that creates a mystery that eventually comes together with great subtlety
Molom, A Legend of Mongolia (1995)
A gentle, affecting film about a boy who begins to learn Buddhist life lessons as he journeys across the wilderness of Mongolia in the company of an old man
Mom & Dad (2017)
A captivating variant on the mass insanity film where parents are frenziedly driven to kill their children. As the murderous father, Nicolas Cage lets all stops go
Mona Lisa and the Blood Moon (2021)
Ana Lily Amirpour, director of A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, returns with a film about a psychic girl and the eccentric grifters that accumulate around her
The Monkey King 2 (2016)
Sequel to the earlier The Monkey King, which was fun but this is altogether a better film. While the first film was more prelude to Journey to the West, this sets out on the journey and tells one of its stories. Directed with an immensely assured command of the live-action and CGi elements
Monolith (2022)
The title monolith is a cheat, this is however a creepy Australian film about a series of ultra-mysterious objects

A very underrated 1950s sf film … Neither quite alien invader film nor monster movie, it features some of the most original creatures of the era – rocks from a meteorite that grow into massive geodes that devour everything in their path – and eerily atmospheric direction
A Monster Calls (2016)
The story of the relationship between a giant monster and a boy whose mother is dying of cancer, this is perhaps the darkest children’s film ever made. Adapted from an award-winning illustrated book
A Monster in Paris (2011)
A charming French-made animated film about a genteel singing monster. Nothing profound but this is beautifully animated and sweetly appealing in all the right places
Monster Mash (2024)
The Asylum conduct a monster bash – a crossover between the Famous Monsters – and actually do a modest and quite enjoyable job that pays affectionate homage to the characters
The Monster Squad (1987)
Rather charming effort where the Famous Monsters – Dracula, the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man, The Mummy, The Creature – are revived and pitted against a group of kids. The film has a great deal of affection for the originals and the encounters are delightful
Monster Zero (1965)
The sixth Godzilla film, the first where the series combines elements of space opera – a typical entry of the era and colourfully entertaining about it too
Monsters: Dark Continent (2014)
This offers the expectation of a sequel to the sleeper hit of Monsters; what we instead get is not many monsters and a film about recruits in a Middle Eastern war zone. That said, you cannot deny that what we have is an undeniably well made film
Monsters vs Aliens (2009)
Cutley appealing DreamWorks animated film that brings together a bunch of oddball creatures clearly intended as an affectionate homage to various 1950s sf films

El Monstro del Mar! (2010)
Australian exploitation homage that is like a collision between Faster Pussycat, Kill! Kill! and a monster movie. Low-budget but this has an authentic recapturing of the spirit of trash cinema

The third and last of the Monty Python films, a variety of skits that are variously outrageous and frequently leave behind all good taste

Solid South Korean attempt to copy Gravity and The Martian with the attempts to rescue an astronaut who becomes stranded on The Moon
Moon Crash (2022)
The Asylum offer up a mockbuster copy of Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall that is far more entertaining than the original

SF film with Sam Rockwell as a lone man stationed on The Moon discovering the truth of his existence, this gained much word of mouth when it came out
Moon Man (2012)
Beautifully made children’s film that is a refreshing change from most of the formulaic product released in the US mainstream. Comes with a sweet simplicity and an enormous freshness, while the animation is rendered with a considerable beauty that makes it just as much a film for adults
Moon Zero Two (1969)
Muchly ridiculed Hammer film that was billed as a ‘Space Western’. Once one gets past that it is actually a far more interesting film than it suggests
More Than a Miracle (1967)
A whimsical Italian fantasy with Sophia Loren as a peasant girl who connects with price Omar Sharif amid romance and magic
Mortal (2020)
The director of The Troll Hunter returns with a stunningly shot film with Nat Wolff a mystery man found by police who demonstrates increasingly more godlike powers
Mortal Kombat (1995)
This film adaptation of the videogame is a lot of fun. The plot rehashes Enter the Dragon but offers up wall-to-wall action and exotic creatures. A directorial debut for Paul W.S. Anderson
Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (2020)
An animated film revival of the Mortal Kombat videogame franchise. This conducts a reasonable reworking of the basics, while blowing you away with the ultra-violent excesses of the action
Most Beautiful Island (2017)
Ana Asensio, a Spanish immigrant, writes, directs and stars in a story about a cash-strapped Spanish immigrant who is forced to seek employment in a secret society in order to make ends meet (*)
The Moth Diaries (2011)
Interesting attempt to rewrite Carmilla for the Twilight crowd. In fact, this is a film that features more credible teenage girls and is far more successful as a horror film and at creating uncanny mood than the Twilight films were

Darren Aronofsky’s surreal drama wildly divided critics and was a box-office flop with general audiences. Naturally, what I thought the film was about was completely different to what Aronofsky stated it was about
